Liederkranz is a cheese originating from Ohio, made from whole cow’s milk, it is a soft, washed rind cheese belonging to the Limburger family if cheeses. This cheese is square shaped with rounded corners and has a mild, sweet flavour when young. When matured for at least 6 weeks, its taste changes. This cheese, which has Germanic roots, was created in 1892 in Monroe by Emil Frey, a Swiss originating from Saint-Gall, who was supposed to return to his country, but could not face the journey back across the Atlantic and so stayed in the US. In 1925, the production at Monroe was transferred to Van Wert in Ohio.
